With the aim of fully implementing the idea of ecological civilization and new development concepts, and advancing China’s green development to a new level, the fifth IEEE Conference on Energy Internet and Energy System Integration was successfully held in Taiyuan from October 22 to 24. More than 1,000 experts and representatives from domestic and foreign universities, research institutions, and electrical and energy equipment manufacturers attended this academic event both online and offline, with an online audience of 10,000.

The conference was co-hosted by IEEE Power & Energy Society, Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering, Taiyuan University of Technology and Tsinghua University, and co-organized by the Energy Internet Research Institute of Tsinghua University, IEEE Power & Energy Society (China), Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, Chinese Electrotechnical Society (CES), Shanxi Electrotechnical Society and Chinese Society of Automation. The conference had the theme of “Carbon Neutrality and Energy Internet”, and explored the theory, roadmap and practical applications of energy and power transformation in light of China’s “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality” goals. The conference aimed to foster the development of a new power system based on renewable energies that is widely interconnected, intelligent and interactive, flexible, safe and controllable. The conference commenced on the morning of October 23, with speeches from Yinbiao Shu, Chairman of the conference, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, President of CSEE, President of the International Electrotechnical Commission and Chairman of China Huaneng Group, Professor Hongbin Sun, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Taiyuan University of Technology and Vice President (in charge of administrative affairs), Head of the Energy Management and Regulation Research Center of the Energy Internet Research Institute of Tsinghua University, and Saifur Rahman, President-designate of IEEE, and Jianhua Bian, President of the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES). The opening ceremony had the attendance of Liantuan Xiao, Vice President of Taiyuan University of Technology, and was moderated by Mingshan Lin, Vice President of CSEE.

In his speech, Yinbiao Shu emphasized that China is facing both daunting challenges and rare opportunities to achieve carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. The energy sector is the main source of China's greenhouse gas emissions. To achieve the goals of “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality”, it is essential to balance development and security, manage the relationship between the whole and the parts, the present and the future, adhere to the principle of “Establishing the new before abolishing the old”, and follow the path of “cleanliness, electrification, digitalization, standardization” backed by technological innovations. Energy Internet is a cutting-edge form of power system development, leading the way for green development and low-carbon energy transition. It is essential to accelerate the building of a new power system based on renewable energies, leverage digital technologies to enhance the intelligent interaction and resilience of power systems, advance basic theoretical innovation for a new power system, and stimulate low-carbon technology innovation. He stated that the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering will continue to act as a bridge and a link, mobilize the majority of science and technology advocates in the energy and power sector, conduct academic exchanges and technological innovation around key issues, and establish itself as an important force for technological innovation and creation, making new and greater contributions to achieving green development and a better future for humanity.

Hongbin Sun extended a sincere welcome to the academicians, experts and researchers who attended the conference, and expressed heartfelt gratitude to the sponsors and organizers. He enthusiastically introduced the history, culture and spirit of Shanxi province to the guests, as well as the basic situation of Taiyuan University of Technology. He pointed out that Shanxi is a comprehensive pilot province of the energy revolution, and it is also one of the provinces that face the most challenges in achieving the “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality” goals. As one of the first “double first-class” key universities in China, Taiyuan University of Technology actively aligns with the national “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality” strategy, based on the major needs of China and the economic transformation and development of Shanxi province. It has carved out a new roadmap with distinctive features of Taiyuan University of Technology by striving to be the pioneer of the national energy revolution. With various initiatives demonstrating a fast pace of development, it is advancing toward the goal of being a comprehensive, research-oriented and high-level first-class university. The conference was held in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province and hosted by Taiyuan University of Technology, which has special significance. It is hoped that everyone will take this conference as an opportunity to accelerate the transformation of the energy revolution together and work hard to find the way to reach the goals of “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality”.

The conference was addressed by Saifur Rahman, President-designate of IEEE, and Jianhua Bian, President of the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES), who elaborated on the significance of the development of global energy Internet and wished the conference a great success. The conference incorporated three special invited lecture sessions that were moderated by Jianbo Guo, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Honorary President of the China Electric Power Research Institute, and Top Consultant of the State Grid Corporation, Weijiang Chen, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Senior Consultant of the State Grid Corporation, and member of the Standing Committee of the China Association for Science and Technology, and Tianshou Zhao, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, ASME Fellow and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. The conference also featured keynote speeches from Xiaoxin Zhou, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, International Member of NAE, Honorary President of the China Electric Power Research Institute, Yi Jiang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Director of Building Energy Research Center of Tsinghua University, Zuyu Chen, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Executive Director of the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering (CSRME), Honorary Chairman of The Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering Branch of China Civil Engineering Society, Licheng Li, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Honorary Director of the Expert Committee of China Southern Power Grid Corporation, and Honorary President of the School of Electric Power Engineering of South China University of Technology, Yican Wu, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Member of the International Nuclear Energy Academy (INEA), Chief Chinese Representative of GIF-LFR, and Shay Bahramirad, President-designate of the IEEE PES and Vice President of Quanta Technology. The speeches explored the development prospects and key technologies of energy and power systems, green development of energy and power, power transmission and distribution solutions, nuclear energy and nuclear safety, and renewable energy consumption in power systems in light of the “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality” goals. The speakers shared their academic achievements with the experts, researchers and representatives who attended the conference. Jianming Liu, Director of the Expert Committee on "Smart Grid Technology and Equipment" of China, member of the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering (CSEE), and Secretary-General of the Chinese Committee of CIGRE D2, pre-released his research result on “New Power System Technology Research Report”. The conference received a total of 1122 papers from different countries and regions, 845 of which were accepted after strict review by over 300 professors and industry experts. The conference also selected 30 outstanding papers and 30 Student’s Outstanding papers. The conference incorporated 24 technical forums, 17 key special seminars on major national R&D project "Smart grid technology and equipment", and organized 70 paper presentation sessions and 5 poster exchange activities, covering the cutting-edge academic developments in the energy and power sector. The high-level academic exchanges and discussions at the conference will further advance the research and development of core technologies in the power and energy sector of key importance in China, and play a positive role in promoting the high-quality development of power and energy technologies in China and achieving the goals of “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality”.
