On the afternoon of March 16, the appointment ceremony for Professor Wang Zhongdong from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at The University of Manchester as Distinguished Visiting Professor of Tsinghua University was held in Conference Room 102, Zone 3, West Main Building, Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA). The ceremony was chaired by Sun Kai, Deputy Dean of EEA. More than 20 faculty members from The University of Manchester, the Graduate School of Tsinghua University, EEA, the Department of Astronomy, the Department of Chemistry, the Department of Physics and the Shenzhen International Graduate School attended the ceremony.

At the beginning of the appointment ceremony, Sun Kai introduced Professor Wang Zhongdong’s professional experience, academic achievements and contributions to promoting academic exchanges and talent cultivation between China and the UK.
Subsequently, Kang Chongqing, Dean of EEA, presented the appointment certificate of Distinguished Visiting Professor of Tsinghua University to Professor Wang Zhongdong. Kang Chongqing expressed sincere gratitude to Professor Wang Zhongdong for her long-term support for the disciplinary development and international exchanges of electrical engineering at Tsinghua University, especially for actively promoting the Tsinghua University–University of Manchester Joint PhD Program. He expressed the hope that with Professor Wang Zhongdong’s appointment as Distinguished Visiting Professor of Tsinghua University, the two sides will further advance talent cultivation and scientific research cooperation in electrical engineering and related cutting-edge interdisciplinary fields.

In her reply speech, Professor Wang Zhongdong stated that as an alumna of EEA, Tsinghua University, she has always held deep gratitude for her alma mater and mother department, and has long hoped to repay the training from her alma mater and mother department through various forms of cooperation. She also expressed special thanks to EEA for its long-term support and trust. She noted that in the future, she will continue to deepen cooperation between the two sides in talent cultivation, scientific research and academic exchanges relying on the University of Manchester–Tsinghua University Joint PhD Program, and promote the two universities to make greater contributions to the global power and energy sector.
About the Speaker
Professor Wang Zhongdong is a renowned scholar in the international field of electrical engineering. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA), Tsinghua University. She is currently a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at The University of Manchester and Director of the University of Manchester–Tsinghua University Joint PhD Program. She previously served as Vice President of the University of Exeter and Director of the Smart Grid Centre.
Professor Wang Zhongdong has made important contributions in the fields of power transformers, insulation systems and insulation materials, high-voltage engineering, and power system safety and reliability. Her research achievements have been selected as two impact case studies in the UK Research Excellence Framework (REF), bringing significant economic benefits. She led the establishment of a research alliance covering the entire transformer industry chain, carried out industry-university-research cooperation with 23 enterprises, and successfully supervised more than 50 PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. She has published 149 journal papers and serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of IET Electrical Materials and Applications, enjoying significant international academic influence.
Professor Wang Zhongdong was elected IEEE Fellow and IET Fellow in 2020, and Foreign Fellow of the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering (CSEE) in 2022.
