On the afternoon of June 16, the appointment ceremony for Tsinghua Distinguished Visiting Professor was held at Lecture Hall 103, Zone 3, West Main Building. Invited to Tsinghua University, Professor Marcio Szechtman, Former Chair of the Technical Council of the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE) and IEEE Life Fellow, visited the university, received the appointment of Tsinghua Distinguished Visiting Professor, and delivered a keynote lecture titled Main Issues of Modern Power Systems in the Energy Transition .
Over 30 attendees were present, including Zheng Zedong, Party Secretary of the Department of Electrical Engineering (DEE); Yu Zhanqing, Deputy Party Secretary of DEE; Sun Kai, Deputy Head of DEE; Zhao Biao, Associate Dean of Ziqiang College, as well as faculty and student representatives from DEE. Sun Kai presided over the appointment ceremony.
During the ceremony, Sun Kai introduced Professor Marcio Szechtman’s academic accomplishments and outstanding contributions to the advancement of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technologies and global international power engineering cooperation. Zheng Zedong, Party Secretary of DEE, presented the official appointment certificate to Professor Marcio Szechtman. He expressed sincere gratitude for the professor’s long-term support for DEE’s development, and anticipated deeper, comprehensive bilateral cooperation in next-generation transmission technology R&D, talent cultivation and international academic exchanges in the future.
In his speech, Professor Marcio Szechtman stated that the title of Tsinghua Distinguished Visiting Professor represented a great honor. He offered heartfelt thanks to Tsinghua University and DEE for the recognition and invitation, and promised to take this appointment as a new opportunity to deepen bilateral collaboration, jointly advancing technological innovation in power systems for the energy transition era.

Professor Marcio Szechtman is a globally recognized leading expert in high-voltage direct current transmission and power system planning, and an IEEE Life Fellow. He currently serves as Technical Advisor for Huairou National Laboratory and Huawei Energy Business Unit. His previous appointments include Director of Centro de Pesquisas de Energia Elétrica (Cepel), Chief Transmission Officer of Centrais Elétricas Brasileiras S.A. (Eletrobras), and Chair of the CIGRE Technical Council from 2018 to 2024.
Boasting more than 40 years of industrial experience, he has long dedicated himself to research and innovation covering HVDC system stability, complex DC grid planning and high-capacity transmission technologies. Professor Marcio Szechtman has been awarded multiple top international honors, including the CIGRE Gold Medal and the Uno Lamm Award, the highest prestigious prize in the HVDC industry.
