On May 25, the 15th Distinguished Lecture of the Jingde Forum was held in Lecture Hall 217, Zone 3, West Main Building. Invited to Tsinghua University, Professor Anjan Bose — Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE), Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), Tsinghua Distinguished Visiting Professor and Professor of Washington State University — delivered an academic lecture themed on the development of power systems for carbon neutrality.

Attendees included Zheng Zedong, Party Secretary of the Department of Electrical Engineering (DEE); Wu Wenchuan, Deputy Party Secretary of DEE; faculty members Zhang Boming, Guo Qinglai and Lin Chenhui, as well as more than 40 faculty and student representatives. The lecture was presided over by Sun Kai, Deputy Head of DEE.

At the certificate presentation session, Sun Kai introduced Professor Bose’s academic achievements and remarkable contributions to boosting Sino-U.S. academic exchanges and talent cultivation. Afterwards, Zheng Zedong, Party Secretary of DEE, presented the commemorative certificate and plaque of the Jingde Forum to Professor Anjan Bose. As a core academic event of the Jingde Forum, this lecture inherited the rigorous academic spirit of predecessors represented by Mr. Gao Jingde, focused on frontier research directions of electrical engineering, and facilitated in-depth collision of academic ideas between China and overseas.

Professor Bose then delivered a keynote speech entitled  Grid Control, Operation, and Electricity Markets for a Carbon-Neutral Future . Centered on core technologies for grid security and energy management, he pointed out that the global deployment of clean energy installations maintained steady growth, while the proportion of non-fossil power consumption kept rising. Nevertheless, the inherent intermittency of photovoltaic and wind power brought new challenges to energy management technologies.

He systematically reviewed the evolution and future trends of Energy Management Systems (EMS) and Distribution Management Systems (DMS), and analyzed potential risks of complex power systems with growing penetration of power electronic equipment. He stressed that securing reliable control and stable grid operation under high-variability renewable energy integration was a core challenge for power systems at present and in the future, which required joint efforts from academia and industry to tackle.
