On the afternoon of June 19, 2023, Professor Daniel Kirschen, IEEE Fellow and professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Washington, gave an academic lecture and received the letter of appointment at the appointment ceremony of the international think tank experts of the Energy Internet Research Institute at the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University. Professor Goran Strbac from Imperial College London, Professor Kang Chongqing, chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering and director of the Energy Internet Research Institute of Tsinghua University, Associate Professor Zhang Ning from the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University, Associate Researcher Dai Jing, deputy director of the Energy Governance Research Center of the Energy Internet Research Institute of Tsinghua University, and more than 30 faculty members and students attended the lecture and appointment ceremony.

Professor Daniel Kirschen's lecture

Associate Professor Zhang Ning of the Department of Electrical Engineering presided over the academic lecture of Professor Daniel Kirschen with the theme of "Integrating Generation Capacity Expansion Planning and Resource Adequacy". During the lecture, Professor Daniel Kirschen introduced the basic concepts of power system planning and its integration with power generation resource adequacy assessment. He proposed an algorithm framework for the iterative identification of key risk periods for high-proportion renewable energy power systems, and elaborated on reliability-based trusted capacity assessment methods for energy storage. The faculty members and students of the Department of Electrical Engineering had a heated discussion with Professor Daniel Kirschen on the topic of the lecture. In addition, Professor Daniel Kirschen also introduced the scope of acceptance, review process, and notes of submission of the new journal IEEE Transactions on Energy Markets, Policies and Regulations, for which he is the editor-in-chief, and encouraged the faculty members and students of the Department of Electrical Engineering to submit their papers.

Professor Daniel Kirschen is a world-renowned scholar in the field of electrical engineering. He is also an IEEE Fellow, and a Foreign Fellow of the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Electromechanical Engineering from the Université Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium, and obtained his master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He had worked at Control Data and Siemens, and taught at the University of Manchester in the UK for 16 years. He is now the Donald W. and Ruth Mary Close professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Washington. His research focuses on the integration of renewable energy sources in the grid, power system economics and power system resilience. His monograph Fundamentals of Power System Economics is a classic work in the field of power systems and has been translated into multiple languages and published worldwide. In 2007, Professor Daniel Kirschen visited the Department of Electrical Engineering and offered a short course on “Fundamentals of Power System Economics”.

The Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Washington have maintained a close relationship of cooperation. Since 2007, Professor Daniel Kirschen has visited the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University more than 10 times. The two sides jointly completed “Basic Research on Low-Carbon and Efficient Multi-Energy Systems for Renewable Energy Consumption”, a key international cooperation research project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, with Professor Daniel Kirschen as the head of the collaborator of the project. Doctoral students from the Department of Electrical Engineering, including Wang Yang, Liu Jingkun, Wang Yi, Cheng Yaohua, Hou Qingchun, Ruan Guangchun, and Zhang Jiawei, have attended the University of Washington for exchange visits. A number of graduates from the Department of Electrical Engineering have studied at the University of Washington. Daniel Olsen, a doctoral student from the University of Washington, also attended Tsinghua University for exchange visits in 2018.
