He is an expert in power system and its automation, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and a professor and doctoral supervisor at Tsinghua University. He graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University as an undergraduate and graduate student in 1962 and 1966, respectively, and then stayed at the university as a teacher, serving as assistant professor, lecturer, associate professor, professor, and deputy head of the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University. From 1989 to 1995, he was the head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics Technology at Tsinghua University; from 1990 to 2009, he was the director of the Power Electronics Engineering Research Centre at Tsinghua University; in 1995, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He has been engaged in teaching and research in the field of power system and its automation for a long time.
